A situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Based on this definition, four food security dimensions can be identified: food availability, economic and physical access to food, food utilization and stability over time.

Situación que se da cuando todas las personas tienen, en todo momento, acceso físico, social y económico a suficientes alimentos inocuos y nutritivos para satisfacer sus necesidades alimenticias y sus preferencias en cuanto a los alimentos a fin de llevar una vida activa y sana. Con arreglo a esta definición, pueden determinarse cuatro dimensiones de la seguridad alimentaria: disponibilidad de alimentos, acceso físico y económico a los mismos, utilización de los alimentos y estabilidad a lo largo del tiempo.

Situation dans laquelle chacun a, à tout moment, un accès matériel, social et économique à une nourriture suffisante, saine et nutritive de nature à satisfaire ses besoins et préférences alimentaires et peut ainsi mener une vie saine et active. Partant de cette définition, il est possible de dégager les quatre dimensions de la sécurité alimentaire suivantes: disponibilités alimentaires, accès économique et matériel à la nourriture, utilisation des aliments et stabilité dans le temps.
