Smallholders are small-scale farmers, pastoralists, forest keepers, fishers who manage areas varying from less than one hectare to 10 hectares. Smallholders are characterized by family-focused motives such as favouring the stability of the farm household system, using mainly family labour for production and using part of the produce for family consumption.

Scope note
- La définition d’un petit exploitant varie selon les pays et les zones agroécologiques. Dans les zones favorables de l’Afrique subsaharienne où les densités de population sont élevées, il cultive souvent moins d’un hectare, tandis que dans les zones semi-arides, il peut cultiver dix hectares ou davantage ou élever dix têtes de bétail. Deux types de petits exploitants peuvent être différenciés: les petits exploitants traditionnels et émergents.
